Most Office 365 client apps use what is called 'modern authentication' for making a secure connection to your email, OneDrive, etc. When the university switched to Office 365, Outlook could only use 'basic authentication' to connect. Since then, modern authentication has also been set up for Outlook but it has not been turned on. Later this year, Microsoft will make modern authentication mandatory for Outlook clients and we need to be ready for that.
In preparation, we will enable modern authentication on Tuesday, 15-Jun-2021 between 6:00AM and 8:00AM. The Outlook desktop software will automatically switch to use this more secure connection method.
No issues are anticipated because of this update. We will still be closely monitoring the outcome of this change. Please contact the helpdesk (ithelp@uoguelph.ca or 519.824.4120 x58888) if individuals in your area do encounter problems or if you have questions/concerns.
